An icon for my friend Zyleeth! Don't reuse this.
Critiques appreciated, I'm still learning how to use color appropriately.

This one is great... glee expression!
In this one it doesn't seem like color so much as shading- which is rather style based anyways- but you might want to try a more paintery approach to it in some areas. Which is hard to explain over the intranets D: But try using hard-edged round brushes and just lowering the opacity to 30 or so... and building up. In some areas you just need to highlight thinly, but on places like the frills a gradual build up might have worked nicely. Again, considering it is an icon, once it is in the 100px size this doesn't matter so much... XD But for future reference :)
One thing that is color theory, though: try to avoid shading with pure white in most cases. Shading is complicated and changes a lot on case by case basis, but it's a good rule of thumb :)

How odd, that's almost exactly how I paint now... hmm. Maybe I should try softer brushes? =X But thank you. I'll have to remember that about highlights -- start thin, slowly work them into the rest. And noted, I'll make sure I stop using white anywhere ^_^;; It's so hard sometimes, I have to force myself!
Thanks for all the feedback..!

Oh, yeah? Hmm... What color is it you're applying, though? The light source color (or white?) Or do you, say, select lighter and lighter versions of the color you started with and add them on? (or visa versa)

See, that's where I have a hard time =S I'm never entirely sure where to pull the highlight colors from. For this one I tried to pull from the lighter parts of the image, and a few tones lighter than that... then I tried to blend them with the base color of the "pieces" if that makes sense. What do you suggest? That's probably my biggest downfall right now, is knowing where to get my palette.

Ah okay... yeah it's really hard to explain I suppose. Next time I'm working digitally I'll try and take note of what I'm doing and see if I can't explain it better!

Thank you! :) I'd be very grateful for that. You're awesome at it 8D;
